Twenty minutes will not deep clean a flat, but it can remove the dirt that makes everyday life unpleasant. Crumbs underfoot, toothpaste around the basin and a sticky kitchen handle matter more during a busy week than the top of a wardrobe. A short weekly clean works when you decide its boundaries before picking up a cloth.

Choose a point when the rooms are reasonably accessible. That might be Saturday after breakfast or an evening before the food shop. If every surface is covered with belongings, spend a separate few minutes returning them first. Otherwise, the cleaning time disappears into decisions about letters and clothes, and the actual dirt remains.

Prepare a small working kit

Take a suitable surface cleaner, separate kitchen and bathroom cloths, a rubbish bag and the vacuum cleaner. Read the cleaner's label for suitable materials and any required contact time. There is no benefit in spraying every surface at once if the product will dry before you reach it. Leave specialist jobs for another session.

Work towards the exit rather than carrying dirt back across finished floors. In a compact British flat, this often means starting with the bathroom, moving through the living area and finishing in the kitchen near the main bin. Adjust the route to your layout. The useful principle is avoiding unnecessary journeys with wet cloths and dusty equipment.

Give the bathroom five minutes

Clear the basin edge, wipe the taps and remove visible marks from the sink. Clean the toilet with dedicated equipment, keeping those tools away from other surfaces. Replace a damp hand towel if needed. A full shower scrub is a different task; do not let limescale around a screen consume this entire visit.

If you share the bathroom, ask everyone to remove personal items beforehand. Moving six bottles repeatedly adds friction without improving cleanliness. A clear basin also makes it easier to spot a leak or a developing stain. Leave the room with its floor accessible and cleaning supplies returned to their secure storage place.

Spend six minutes in the kitchen

Deal with food residue on preparation surfaces, the hob when cool, and handles touched during cooking. Use a clean cloth and a product appropriate for the finish. Empty a full rubbish bin and replace the liner. Avoid opening cupboards: their contents can wait unless a spill needs immediate attention.

Check the sink rather than automatically polishing every appliance. Remove trapped scraps and clear the draining area enough for the next meal. If washing up is still waiting, wash the essentials and schedule the rest honestly. A twenty minute clean cannot also absorb a large stack of dishes without losing its purpose.

Use the remaining time where feet travel

Vacuum the routes between the front door, sofa, bed and kitchen. Concentrate on visible grit, crumbs and fluff rather than moving heavy furniture. In wet weather, the entrance mat may need more attention than the bedroom. On another week, pet hair around seating may be the main problem.

Keep the last two minutes for putting equipment away and hanging reusable cloths to dry before laundering. Note one larger job that you noticed, such as cleaning beneath the sofa, but do not begin it now. Stopping on time makes this routine easier to repeat. Over several weeks, a dependable modest clean is more useful than an ambitious session that keeps being postponed.
